Just as a side note, I've just moved my blog to my new classroom website so the updated link for the Padlet post is mrskarpiuk.com/padlet-in-the-classroom/ and I won't be updating this blog any longer. But as you can see, I ended up really embracing the SAMR model. I think it's a bit simpler and easier to follow, and it really was more than a framework for integrating technology - it tied in to a lot of other things we had talked about in that summer course and just resonated with me. I think since we're just starting BYOD in our district this upcoming year, I thought SAMR was easier and made more sense to help teachers who are just getting their feet wet see the progression.Mrs. Karpiukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13938043050710469628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875524548622223176.post-80692685627045345032013-08-08T17:55:44.370-04:002013-08-08T17:55:44.370-04:00Hello Lesley,

I often conduct one-on-one PDs with teachers and wondering if this organizational method would be more beneficial during those session as oppose to using the TIM as is. It's what I use at work to make and document tutorial video clips for staff on how to use various technology that we have, like their online gradebook, etc. I used Camtasia to screencapture and add in the arrows, boxes, etc. (There are lots of screencapture programs available - check out this site for some more ideas! http://www.schrockguide.net/screencasting.html)

The video itself was a combination of PPT slides (so all the intro stuff and in between) and then me demonstrating in Google Docs. I'd stop the video/recording between each demo/level of SAMR and then put all the clips together when editing. I hope that makes sense! Jing is a free program that does screencapture (up to 5 mins) and it's really easy to use - it's on that list in the site I linked above!

Back on topic: I, too, struggle the most between Augmentation and Modification and coming up with clear differences and whether I'm in one or the other... but then I think you expressed my feelings well: what matters is that technology is being used at a higher level than Substitution. I have come to accept that not EVERY use of technology is ALWAYS going to be transformational/redefinition. And that's okay. It's okay to do SOME substitution. But striving to move up is important.

Julia: I, too, am so visual! The SAMR model really was the biggest, most important piece of this course for me because I feel like I can SEE how it all works and how all aspects of the course work together because of this framework.

Have a great year, you two!Mrs. Karpiukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13938043050710469628noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875524548622223176.post-45016285713647136692013-08-05T00:51:40.646-04:002013-08-05T00:51:40.646-04:00I too really found the SAMR model useful. How did you make your SAMR model video? ...Lesley,

How did you make your SAMR model video? I've seen so many of those screenshot & narrated videos that people have made for a variety of topics, but I have never found out how they do that. Do you use a video editing program like Adobe Premiere or is it more simple than that?

I learned a lot from the SAMR model as well and every time I use technology I'm always looking at it through the SAMR lens to figure out if I can think of a way to ratchet up my lesson to a higher level of SAMR. I still find myself having a hard time differentiating between some of the levels, however. I struggle the most differentiating between the Augmentation and Modification stage. In the end, I'm not sure if it really matters. What matters, in my opinion, is that technology is being used at a level higher than Substitution.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16411988224862392518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875524548622223176.post-44952736415359269082013-07-28T15:04:42.146-04:002013-07-28T15:04:42.146-04:00I agree that since students are on Facebook/Twitte...I agree that since students are on Facebook/Twitter and other social media basically 24/7 it's the perfect place to keep them up-to-date on assignments, hold class discussions, and learn what safe, responsible digital citizenship means. The fact that they're comfortable with it just makes it more likely that they'll actually check it and contribute to a class page. I love Edmodo, but the downside is that it's another site they have to log in to and check. With Facebook or Twitter, they're more than likely already logged in and checking it regularly, so it's a win-win!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12529094852057216758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875524548622223176.post-62532818664581235222013-07-27T16:43:28.303-04:002013-07-27T16:43:28.303-04:00I just wrote my own blogged and then searched out ...I just wrote my own blogged and then searched out others to respond to for our blog requirement. They are tools which don't require any kind of training or instruction on how to use them because just about EVERY student is already using them.

I also agree that digital citizenship is a big part of allowing students to use social media. They need to understand how serious and dangerous these tools can be if they are used haphazardly with little regard for others or themselves.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16411988224862392518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875524548622223176.post-26648387113576021132013-07-21T21:29:29.358-04:002013-07-21T21:29:29.358-04:00We've been using MBC for just over a year now,...We've been using MBC for just over a year now, but not many teachers take full advantage of what it has to offer mainly because we haven't had any PD time to dig in to it and learn how to use it. Fortunatley, I've attended eConferences and have developed a good understanding of MBC and the value of Bundles for collaboration and as a way to develop digital curriculum. Not having a 1:1 program, however, has made integration of MBC in my classroom difficult. Here I thought all along that I was making a difference by having students look up info on web sites rather than read it in a textbook, but along comes the SAMR model which reminds me that I really haven't used technology in the way I should be. This has helped me see things from a different perspective as I plan lessons with technology. I find myself questioning whether I'm just substituting technology for something no-tech, or if I'm creating something that is redefining how I teach the lesson.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16411988224862392518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6875524548622223176.post-29787742758621762202013-07-10T16:31:50.990-04:002013-07-10T16:31:50.990-04:00I think the matrix and the SAMR model is going to ...I think the matrix and the SAMR model is going to be key this upcoming school year to help teachers start thinking more about how they're using technology and show them where they need to go. From your posts, it looks like we are very similar with our needs and progress. This year we will be focusing on integration with the programs that the district offers and try not to add more tools. We have decided that teachers never reach the transformational level because they brush the surface on too many different programs and never get proficient at any.
